Womack, the VC Baracchi veteran of note

Chris Womack followed up his personal best 25-mile time reported last week with another sub-hour ride in the Norwich Amateur Bicycle Club’s open 25-mile time trial on the A11, beating his club-mates. 

It was not quite as fast a course as when he did a “58” but this week Womack notched up 59:17. 

Mark Newnham is likely to have been a bit fed up that his 1-00-01 was not a couple of seconds less and he was run fairly close by George Kerridge with 1-00:24 to make a trio of good rides. 

Nicki Hawkes of Team VeloVelocity (VCB second claim) also excelled with 1-02:17.  Dave Green of RAF CC took the win with 52:22.  77 riders entered. 

In the Saturday 10-mile NABC event on the Wortwell-based course riders had to contend with a hot afternoon and recently-laid tar spray and chippings on a third of the course.  Though these had been well swept the rougher surface definitely slowed this section of the road. 

Womack was able to do well in the conditions with 24:40 and John Swanbury less so with 26:10. 

Brian Davies of Carlton Colville rode in 24:52.  Andrew Mayne of Birdwell Wheelers won in 22:04 and second was Andrew Leggett of Stowmarket & District CC with 22:33.  

In the GHS championship event, a national schools championship (named after the late George Herbert Stancer who was at one time the CTC president and a leading sportsman), which preceded the above open 10, Declan Davis of CC Breckland and Wayland Academy showed his incredible ability with 22:54 to win this local heat. 

It was a Strada Sport one-two in the Gt Yarmouth CC club 10 at Somerleyton, withLowestoft’s Joe Skipper at the top of the results with 21:54 and his team mate Harley Matthews second in 22:07, both of which seem very fast.  Third was Andy Tyler of CC Breckland with 22:52. 

The twenty riders in the event included VCB’s Allistair Banks with 27:05 and two up-coming VCB riders, Steve Grant, who was very respectably over 20mph with 29:37 and Joe Reynolds who only just missed out on this with 30:09 for seventeenth place.

The Wrinklies rides at 9am on Tuesdays and Fridays from Carlton Colville church usually include a number of VCB riders and recent rides have been no exception.   They are normally about 45 miles and include a stop at the Posh Pigs cafe in Ellough on the return.
