Womack on his best form ever!

Chris Womack of Velo Club Baracchi has just enjoyed two wonderful ten-mile time trial rides, both of which would have been stunning personal bests if he had ridden the slower one first, but by riding over 40 seconds faster than ever before, he set his personal best with the first one.

Womack hit the heights with his 23:20 ride in the Anglia Velo event on the A14 at Risby on Saturday and continued his scintillating form with a 23:31 in the VC Norwich event on Monday.

Also riding in the Anglia Velo event, John Swanbury was less successful, finding the conditions less easy to manage than Womack did and only achieving 25:33.

Steady rain earlier in the day had given way to some fast moving cloud with light rain and variable wind.

The winner was Jason Bouttell of Team Velovelocity.co.uk with 20:01 with Jim Burgess of Anglia Velo second in 20:36 and Mark Arnold of Team Velovelocity.co.uk third in 20:40.

Monday’s event on the A11 Besthorpe/Mulbarton/Besthorpe course was well supported by VCB riders.  Womack’s 23:31 ride was the fastest from the club, just beating George Kerridge 23:32 and Steve Summons who rode a personal best time (23:58), his first above 25mph average.

Other times included Nicki Hawkes (Team Velovelocity.co.uk) 25:00, Jenny Anderson (Gt Yarmouth CC) 25:05 and Brian Davies (Anglia Velo) 24:23.

Strada Sport duo Liam Gentry and Nick Esser, who are both former VCB members, achieved 21:56 and 23:28 respectively.

It was a warm morning, starting at 16ºC and with a light head wind rising for the second half of field (which Womack was in) to a fresh head wind out to the turn at 5.5 miles, with a following wind to finish.

Bouttell won again with 20:12 from his club-mate Scott Davidson 21:19 and Dave Green of RAF CC third in 21:21 and Harley Matthews of Strada Sport (ex-GYCC) fourth in 21:27.

Swanbury rode in the penultimate Diss CC evening 10 last Tuesday, which attracted 30 solo riders and a tandem.  Swanbury’s time was 26:19, halfway down a varied field including novices and established riders.

The tandem pair, Simon Scott and Jim Burgess of Anglia Velo rode a time that must be one of the best for a tandem on Diss club’s Billingford course, 20:46.  The fastest solo was Steve Gorbutt of the home club (21:31).

John Thompson rode the Suffolk CTT 206km Audax associated with the Mildenhall Rally, where he also spent part of his weekend, enjoying the catering available.

Thompson finished the Audax in less than twelve hours and commented, “I was pleased about this as there are a lot of cafe controls on this event, which takes up a lot of time” and he commented on the headwind that lasted for around 87 of the 128 miles. It was raining steadily for a while early on but later it was spitting intermittently throughout the rest of the ride.

The GYCC 25-mile club 25 is this Sunday at 9.30am from Market Lane north of Somerleyton and forms part of the Holmes Cup competition between Gt Yarmouth CC and VCB. [subsequently cancelled or postponed – road works]
