Velo Club Baracchi club run fun
Velo Club Baracchi’s club run on Sunday attracted nine riders, who rode just over 60 miles in the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside.
They followed a time-honoured route to Halesworth and then set off again through Wissett to Homersfield and thence into Norfolk towards the Pulhams, returning by way of Harleton and Bungay before setting off again up Annis Hill to return to Lowestoft through Ringsfield and Weston.
For the middle part of the ride the group split into two, with the quicker riders disappearing into the distance and both groups riding at their own pace.
The week before, club secretary Nicki Hawkes, with George Kerridge, James Moore (Strada Sport), Tom Moore, Paul Clarke and John Cooper headed off to Weston Longville to take part in the Tour of the Broads. This was an event of 100km and was being promoted for Sean Yates’ new book.
The weather was perfect. The route took them from the north of Norwich down to the Reedham Ferry. An excellent spread was supplied and after a 15 minute stop the riders headed off back to Norwich.
One or two signage issues took a couple of them along the Trowse bypass instead of via Whitlingham Lake. James Moore was one of the first to get back as expected with the rest of them not that far behind.
John Thompson was the club’s sole rider in the CC Breckland 50-mile time trial on the A11 and he was unlucky to be near the end of the field, as the wind rose during the event.
As he pointed out, the slower the rider is, the longer he is exposed to the headwinds, so it becomes a vicious circle, especially with the wind increasing.
The outcome was a time that disappointed Thompson, as he had failed to average 20mph with his 2-35:20 time.
The winner was Nik Bowdler (Pedal Revolution.co.uk) in 1-44:07.
The Baracchi Trophy 2-up 25-mile is at 9.30am on September 22 at Somerleyton, with the riders doing their best to keep out of the way of a triathlon taking place on the same morning.
