VCB’s Richards is quick and Womack wins age category at CC Breckland 10

Mark Richards and Chris Womack of Velo Club Baracchi had good rides in the first open time trial of the season they had entered, Saturday’s CC Breckland 10.

Richards was the tiniest fraction under 26mph, timed in at 23:06, while the club’s fastest 68-year-old, Womack, maintained his policy of constant improvement with 25:05, which was 14 seconds faster than in the same event last year.

The event was on a course between Hingham and Carbrooke and Womack reported that there was a very strong head to side wind making the outward leg hard, but helping a bit on the return leg.

Womack won the age group (66-70) prize because the faster rider in this group, Chris Nudds of CC Breckland, won the second place overall on veteran standards, which paid a little better and except in the case of team prizes an individual rider cannot win more than one.

The winner was David McGaw of Cambridge CC in 20:30, a new course record by 39 seconds.

Second was Daniel Bloy of Team VeloVelocity in 21:02 and Jim Burgess of Anglia Velo, whose time was 21:13, took the “1^st vet on standard” prize, leaving the third place prize for James Trenchard of Team VeloVelocity for his 21:36.

Sally Withey of VC Norwich won for the ladies in a course record time of 25:48 and Declan Davis won for the juniors in 23:56.

Riders gathering for the club run

On Sunday there was a good VCB club ride from the Colville Road roundabout. A group comprising George Kerridge, Richards, Womack, Nicki Hawkes and Karl Brady headed towards Halesworth where they saw Mike Wood, John Cooper and Paul Clarke.  Karl left them at Henham.

The other five headed off and rode through to Sibton, turning right up the steep hill and turning right again towards Laxfield and Fressingfield.  They headed towards Harleston, heading home along the Earsham bypass, stopping at the Earsham Road café in Bungay on the way.

Hawkes reported that it was a lovely ride – 60 miles in total at an average speed of 18mph.

The first order of club clothing in a new pattern is presently in production and club riders are looking forward to seeing some of the new kit made up and in use. Red, white and blue remain the VCB club colours, with an emphasis on the blue perhaps.

Riding with the Wrinklies

The “Wrinklies” midweek rides remain popular as non-club-based opportunities to get out into the countryside for non-competitive group cycling.

Last Friday’s ride attracted ten riders, who met at Carlton Colville church at 9am. There are similar rides on Tuesdays.
