VC Baracchi riders make big impression at CC Breckland 10
There were great performances by Velo Club Baracchi riders in the out-of-season CC Breckland 10-mile time trial on the A11 on New Year’s Day.
All four VCB riders recorded times close to or better than they achieved in last year’s event and there was close competition between them.
Liam Gentry had the best time of the four, with 21:51, for third place overall in the open event behind Paul Jay and Andrew Leggett, both of Team VeloVelocity, with 21:35 and 21:48 respectively.
Mark Richards achieved 22:15 for sixth place equal and Paul Dennington was only three seconds slower with 22:18 for eighth despite not having a lot of opportunity to train.
Dennington was in third place on veteran standard times with +4:32 (his age standard was 26:50, which he beat by 4:32).
Chris Womack achieved 24:34 and he was just outside the veteran prizes with +4:18, as his standard at age 69 is now 28:52.
The top two veteran places went to Chris Nudds of CC Breckland with +4:32 and Simon Daw of Veloschils Interbike RT with +4:22.
Tricia Goulden of West Suffolk Wheelers was the fastest lady with 25:50.
The VCB team had a good crack in the team competition against the actual and regular winners, Team VeloVelocity. TVV’s riders Jay and Leggett, with their club-mate Geoff Frost (22:53) had a total time of 66:16 and the three fastest VCB times added up to an exceptionally close 66:24.
The weather was fairly dull but dry and the stronger winds of the day had yet to rise. Thirty-one riders took part.

John Thompson rode the East Anglian CC 50-mile reliability rides on Sunday and set off from Horsford to Aylsham, Roughton, Felbrigg, Holt bypass and Melton Constable and back to Horsford by way of Saxthorpe.
The wind was generally favourable except for the final 12 miles from Saxthorpe.
He said, “Apart from a lot of puddles due to the overnight rain, the weather for most of the event was rather pleasant for early January.” Thompson got round in 3 hours 20 minutes, within his target.
- Velo Club Baracchi reliability rides this Sunday January 10 will start and finish outside Life Cycles’ shop at far western end of Mobbs Way, (Oulton industrial estate, off Gorleston Rd), with the 4-hour riders at 8.30am, 3.5 hours at 9am and 3 hours at 9.30am. Riders can use the facilities in the shop. There should also be refreshments at the finish.
