Hayward top rider in Godric 10; Alex He ventures into tandem riding

Paul Hayward of Velo Club Baracchi rode the club’s fastest time in the Godric CC 10-mile time trial last week, with 22:43.

Other VCB solo times were Paul Dennington 22:58, Stuart Supple 24:32 and junior rider Billy Girling 24:37.

Alex He, who had not ridden a tandem before, rode as the stoker for John Swanbury and they achieved 23:43.

It was a windy evening, with a cross-headwind and a swift return leg, so in general the times were good.  Fastest was Mark Richards of DAP CC in 20:36, saved from a contest with Lucas he of Cambridge University CC by the latter’s puncture before the start.

Lee Garrod of Sole Bay Cycle Sport took second in 21:54 and Denise Hurren of Team VeloVelocity was the fastest woman in 23:41. There were 29 riders in all.

Thursday’s Gt Yarmouth CC 10-mile club time trial on the Lound course doubled as the VC Baracchi Athletes Cup event. In which club members ride road bikes and avoid aero aids like skinsuits and time trial helmets.

The winner of the cup was Paul Dennington in 25:46, run close by Patrick Harbord in 26:08 (his first “10” of the year), Paul Hayward 26:30, Paul Reed 27:47, Richard Ivan Allen 31:26 and John Swanbury 32:01, with Jodie Lee on 33:56 and Mark Womack (on TT bike) 27:38.

Lucas He (CUCC) on a road bike was faster in 24:48. The fast man of the night was Joe Skipper (Team Skipper) in 20:57.

On provisional results in the RTTC National Championship 12-hour time trial organised by CC Breckland, Joe Skipper, who is a professional triathlete living in Norwich but originally from Lowestoft, won the national 12-hour championship to add to his British Ironman Champion title.

Unfortunately, a Garmin programming error made by Skipper sent him the wrong way and he was not credited with the whole distance he rode, having missed out part of the correct route.

He was credited with 309 miles and sadly his actual distance of about 325 miles did not reach the record books.  It would have been a national competition record.

Chris Womack’s time in the VC Norwich 25 (omitted from a previous report) was 1-00:07.

John Thompson recently rode the Essex Rivers and Reservoirs 212.5km audax from Witham, taking 12 hours and 45 minutes.  It included Stock, Burnham-on-Crouch, Tillingham, Abberton Reservoir Visitor Centre Sudbury, Great Bardfield and Littley Green.
