Mike Rainton is voted VC Baracchi’s Rider of the Year
Velo Club Baracchi’s long distance enthusiast Mike Rainton won the vote of his fellow club members to become Rider of the Year at the annual presentation evening.
His achievements included riding 324.661 miles in this year’s Mersey Road Club 24-hour time trial to win the club’s trophy unopposed and completing his sixth Land’s End to John O’Groats sponsored ride for the Bishop Simeon Trust in six days at an average of 16.2mph.
Rainton received his award from the new club secretary Nicki Hawkes, but the principal guest of the evening was Sally Withey of VC Norwich, who received the Jane Travers Memorial Trophy for her open time trial win in May.
Club chairman Brian Boxall officiated and Sally Withey presented the trophies and certificates to club members, 23 of whom had ridden time trials in the year.
Mark Newnham won the 10-mile championship, veteran 10-mile scratch championship, veteran 10-mile championship, the 30 and 50-mile championships, the veteran 50-mile scratch championship (the Ernie Randall Memorial Trophy) and the short course best all-rounder trophy.
Chris Womack was away but on his behalf his son Mark collected his winnings, the veteran 10-mile and 25-mile championships, the veteran best all-rounder and club best all-rounder trophies.
Rainton also picked up the 100-mile and veteran 100-mile trophies. Gary Matthews won the 25-mile veteran and veteran scratch trophies.
Jenny Anderson won the women’s championships at 10, 25 and 30 miles and Tracy Prewer won at 50 miles.
The Baracchi Trophy and its handicap version both went to Ali Banks and Paul Bedford for their win in the club’s two-up time trial, John Swanbury and Ali Banks won the two tandem trophies and George Kerridge won the Freewheel trophy. Banks also won the Athletes’ 10 for his win in the “old school” non-aero event.
Emma Hewitt and Amy Finch won the Women’s Rosebowl Trophy for their six sportives, which included the overnight Dunwich Dynamo. Lee Cook of Rock Estate Runners and Riders, who was not present, won the Keith Stephens Memorial Trophy for the club’s duathlon.
The outgoing secretary Patrick Harbord was applauded for his thirteen or so years’ service to the club and for his win in the hill climb for the Bernard Dale Memorial Trophy, presented to him by Jenny Dale.
The Charles Grimmer cup was awarded to the club’s treasurer Sharon Mills for her services to the club.
After the night’s celebration at the Marquis of Lorne thirteen of the club’s riders assembled for the Chairman’s breakfast ride to Bungay, led on this occasion by the vice-chairman, Paul Bedford at an unfamiliar brisker pace.
Clearly Bedford needs some training from the chairman as he also failed to order the full English breakfast, making do with some scrambled egg!
