Saunders rides a personal best in Godric open 10
Mark Saunders of Velo Club Baracchi rode a splendid personal best time of 21:48 in the Godric CC open 10-mile time trial based at Alburgh on Saturday.
Saunders was in sixth place behind Stuart Fairweather (Team VeloVelocity) with 19:55, Simon Hanse (Stowmarket & District CC 20:14, Richard Carrington (West Suffolk Wheelers) 21:12, Steve Cave (Plomesgate CC) 21:24 and Dale Sturman (West Suffolk Wheelers) 21:28.
Jodie Lee of VCB achieved a new personal best time, 30:52.
Other VCB times were Paul Hayward 22:42, Stuart Supple 23:22, Paul Dennington 24:00, Mark Womack 26:53, and John Swanbury 27:20.
Local rider Denise Hurren of Team VeloVelocity was the women’s winner in 23:05 and the fastest of three tandems was ridden by Dean Lubin and John Iszatt of Team Vision Racing in 20:46.
On Sunday John Swanbury rode in the East District Cycling Association 25-mile championship on the A47 to the north-east of Wisbech, recording 1-05:46.
It was not one of the rare still days on the Fens. The south-westerly side-wind on the course hindered a little more in one direction on the two-lap course and helped on the other.
The championship was won by Lloyd Chapman of Plomesgate CC in 50:46. Second was Andy Sewell of Aspire Velo Racing Team in 52:25 and Daniel Bloy of Team VeloVelocity third in 52:48.
The fastest lady was Rebecca Johnson of Brother UK Fusion RT in 57:05 but that may not be an EDCA team, in which event Cindy Berry of DAP CC would be the champion in 1-01:25.
Local time trials last Tuesday were cancelled in the rain that fell heavily inland but Paul Wright braved the elements to take part in round 5 of the Lotus league circuit racing at Hethel.
The evening was blessed with pretty evil weather, very wet, with lots of surface water and road spray leading to a cold race. Despite this the riders and helpers showed great enthusiasm and Wright scrapped through in 19th place after the whole bunch was eventually strung out and split up.
Thursday’s Gt Yarmouth CC club 10 was also cancelled because of the wet.
VCB’s Stuart Supple put his time trial skills to good use in the Beccles Triathlon in a composite team with his brother-in-law swimming and a colleague running and they took first place in the team event.
The club run took place on Sunday, including Alex He and Paull Killett. John Thompson also set out for his own Sunday ride and covered some 65 miles.
