Veteran Womack on form
Chris Womack of Velo Club Baracchi was pleased with his time of 1-05:52 in the King’s Lynn 25-mile open time trial, where he won the veteran prize on handicap in the 60 to 69 age group for his second-fastest 25 this year.
Womack reported a strong crosswind on the outward leg of this undulating course but an easier return. The scratch winner was Daniel Bloy of King’s Lynn CC in 57:20.
Earlier in the week, in the Godric CC club 10-mile time trial at Earsham, Liam Gentry was pipped to the win by ten seconds by Jim Burgess of Anglia Velo.
Burgess achieved 21:30 to Gentry’s 21:40 and Burgess then rode again, achieving 22:05 on his second run, seven seconds slower than Will Bamber of Cult racing.
With the combined power of two men on a bike, John Swanbury and Ali Banks of VCB were sixth in the results with 23:22, twenty-three seconds faster than the previous week.
Chris Womack used this event to surge back after a week’s holiday by sneaking under the 25-minute mark with 24:59 and John Thompson’s time was 27:11.
Gentry pulled out all the stops for the Gt Yarmouth CC 10 at Somerleyton with 22:47 but Stuart Pryce of Nottingham Clarion CC topped that with 22:27. Nick Esser was third with 23:52, well ahead of the 25:36 recorded by the next-fastest, Larry Colby of the home club.
Other VCB times were Chris Womack 27:03, Jenny Anderson 28:00 and Anthony Potts 31:37. Twenty-three rode, plus one at five miles.
The inter-club Holmes Cup 25-mile time trial between Gt Yarmouth CC and VC Baracchi was to be decided on handicap and the results of that calculation are awaited.
Meanwhile the actual times were: Neil Turner GYCC 1-2:16, Mark Westrup VCB 1-4:39, Jules Claxton GYCC 1-6:54, Chris Womack VCB 1-6:56, Adam Houlgate GYCC 1-06:59, Lewis Bird GYCC 1-7:42, Clive Bond GYCC 1-8:11, Mark Nickerson 1-9:50, Harley Matthews GYCC 1-10:08, Mark Dixon GYCC 1-10:38, Kevin House GYCC 1-11:13, Jenny Anderson VCB 1-11:38, Clive Julian GYCC 1-12:02, Richard Allen VCB 1-13:01, Mark Womack VCB 1-15:49, Ray Eastick GYCC 1-18:29, Tracy Prewer VCB 1-19:01, Tim Amphlett GYCC 1-19:35, Pete Smith GYCC 1-21:12, Josh Carr GYCC 1-21:21, Rob Harlow GYCC DNF, Roger Farrow GYCC DNF.
Others: Stuart Pryce Nottingham Clarion CC 59:46, Lewis and Chris Roberts 1-5:45.
In the windy VTTA East Anglia open 10-mile time trial starting on the Wortwell by-pass and turning at Clays’ roundabout the VCB times were led by Mark Newnham with 23:34, with Jenny Anderson 26:10 and John Thompson 27:07. Fastest was non-veteran Nino Piccoli of Team Pedal Revolution in 20:36.
Thompson also rode the Bedfordshire Roads CC 25 from Tempsford, turning on the last roundabout before the A1 becomes a motorway just north of Baldock. He was a little disappointed with 1-13:32 on a day when the conditions and the nature of the course made it tough. Ian Cammish (Planet X) won in 53:02.
